Graduating from the Faculty of Accountancy of Nanyang Technological University, Genie become a certified youth counselor before emerging as a multi-talented rising starlet. Besides singing, Genie also composes, writes lyrics, arranges music, dances and plays a variety of music instruments. Before starting to concentrate music, Genie did a stint in modeling, acting and compere work.
In 2003, she started her own music school, believing that many young talents have got what it takes to make it in music but lack opportunities to learn and to be better, more well-crafted, and, very often, a little help from the guiding rope is all that they need at times to scale mountains. Only doing things for passion, she took a bold step of faith, exhausted every cent of savings to start what she did.
That same year, Genie was invited to sing for Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew’s 80th birthday party. Also that year, she started to compose and record her own songs, resulting in her debut album, “Genie's Mood Diary 君怡 - 心情日记” released in June 2005. She is the first singer in Singapore to use her blog (http://www.genie.sg/) to launch an album of songs reaching out to the young as “Genie's Mood Diary 君怡 - 心情日记” contains a repertoire of songs inspired by, and based on, daily entries from her blog. The album won her a nomination for the Singapore Hit Awards 2005 - Media Recognition Award - New Local Artiste.
In June 2006, Genie launched a virtual album titled “Genie's MAgIC (Short for Movement Against Illegal Content)”, with all her original songs released purely online. This was her private initiative to educate Singaporean youths about copyright infringement through file sharing. This initiative was supported by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS). Genie has approached schools and tertiary institutions to bring this ongoing movement closer to the core group of people who download music from the net.
Her efforts were recognized by members of the public and she was awarded the Pantene Shine Award. Her prize money of S$10,000 was pledged to promote and continue her movement against illegal content-sharing/downloading as part of her contribution to the welfare and development of local music.
2006 was also an experiential year for Genie as she assumed the lead role for a local English musical “Swingle” staged at the Esplanade, written and directed by Lionel Chok with music by Iskandar Ismail and Genie herself. This sell-out production required Genie to act, dance, and sing as she convincingly played a character who is much older than her own age.
In time for Christmas 2006, Genie launched a special sell-out Christmas CD – “Because Of Love 因为有爱” for charity. This limited edition CD contains the singles from “GENIE's MAgIC”, plus a brand new original Christmas song written, co-produced and arranged by Genie, in both English and Chinese. Genie did more than 50 shows during the month of December to promote the CD and all proceeds from the sale of the CD were donated to The Salvation Army of Singapore.
“Genie's Mood Diary II 心情日记第二章”, the third physical album by Genie was launched on 20 April 2008, following a full house preview concert at the University Cultural Centre, NUS at the end of 2007.
On the 4 June 2008, the compassionate and driven Genie spearheaded, organised and hosted the “Sichuan Gift of Love Charity Dinner Concert” with resounding success. These efforts resulted in a gross total of more than S$45,000 being raised within that one night for the purpose of helping the Sichuan earthquake victims. Genie received praises from the Chinese Embassy representative, the Guest of Honour, the members of the audience and public for having pulled off such a feat with little manpower within such a short span of 10 days only to produce and prepare for the high quality full length fundraising dinner concert show. To showcase her versatility, Genie 君怡 held a jazz concert, titled “When Harry Met Mei Li” in January 2009 at the NUS Law Auditorium.
During her graduate studies at National University of Singapore NUS, Genie 君怡was humbled by what she had learnt through Biomedical Law and Ethics about end-of-life patients. That prompted her to write a new song titled “Dreams & Awakenings” and to launch a thumb drive album of the same name in June 2011, with all of the proceeds going to HCA Hospice Care. The album was launched with a concert on 26 June 2011 at the Singapore EXPO. In order to raise more funds for the beneficiary, Genie 君怡 also put up her prized possessions such as guitars, keyboards and oil paintings done by her for an online auction.
A darling with every audience and organizer that she had hosted events for from small to mega scale of up to 10,000 people, Genie 君怡 has had extensive experience in hosting of all sorts – state functions, corporate functions, product launch events, social events, pageants and even road shows, you name it.
Quick witted, sophisticated, charismatic and appropriately humorous all rolled into one, she has never failed to capture the hearts of her audience and in keeping every proceeding under control as the Master of Ceremony. She is effectively trilingual (English, Mandarin and Cantonese), extremely versatile, easy to work with and has indeed more than exceeded expectations of a host in any setting.
On the 14th November 2011, Genie 君怡 had won the prestigious Spirit of Enterprise Award for 2011 for her inspiring entrepreneurial spirit in the past 7 years.
